Today was a joyful day. Let me tell you why. I received my first string of real pearls today, custom-made by Dutch jewellers Gem Kingdom. When I picked them up, I instantly fell in love with them, and we discussed why not more men wear pearls. Later on in the day it suddenly struck me: Why do so few men wear pearls? So many times in my life, I got asked whether I was a boy or a girl. Not that I look like a girl, but I wear things that in most people’s opinion belong to a specific gender category, in this case the category woman.

All the fashion weeks are kind off over, so what’s new in fashion land? What to talk about? Well… not much actually.

But what did happen yesterday was a very exclusive launch in New York for the happy few.

Do you like treats? Well, you could take a look at the latest collection presentation of Chanel on the Internet, because a treat is was. Many euros were spent on building a Parisian street décor inside a building – all to treat the fashion press to an experience they could already experience on their way to the show, rushing trough the streets of Paris. To tap into Parisian street life, the show ended with a supermodel protest march supporting feminism. Although there is something to say for the quote ‘make fashion not war’, the protest came as a surprise to me.

Jean Paul Gaultier showed his last ready-to-wear collection with a statement that the raging pace of fashion leaves too little time for true creativity. With Jean Paul creating 8 collections per year, that’s a statement I understand. However, he will keep on creating couture collections, pieces that take a lot of time and attention, but it’s unfortunate that those pieces are not for everybody. So can couture be perceived as slow fashion?

Do you remember Kim Kardashian’s most talked about outfit at the Met Gala in 2013? It was a head-to-toe floral outfit; some people compared her to a couch, even robin Williams tweeted that he wore it better as Mrs. Doubtfire.

This week Marni presented the new floral at Milan Fashion Week. At the show, fashion editors could buy a Marni flower bag and flowers at the Marni flower market – proceeds went to a good cause. Even though it looked a bit like Chanel’s supermarket, it was still a charming publicity stunt.

The world is confused. At a time when the economic crisis still leaves its mark on our lives, it’s difficult to make up your mind about which route to take. While we’re looking for a state of mindfulness, you can wonder till which extent to take this. Should we still eat at McDonald’s, if we know the things they serve can’t be considered actual food, or should we only eat soy yogurt with fruit from local farmers.

Some things are just plain odd, and let me explain to you why. Every now and then, nude colours are very en vogue, and if you look from up close you might ask yourself whether there’s anything wrong with that. In Holland we ride bikes on a regular basis, and do you have any idea how someone wearing nude colours looks from afar when you pass them on your bike?

I’m not one to talk negatively online because that’s something I don’t really appreciate, but there is something that surprises me time after time. As probably a lot of you know, I spend quite some time online and on my mobile, and what has really caught my eye lately is the phrase ‘long hair, don’t care’ or any other kind of hair-accompanying selfie. So you show your long hair, blue hair or any kind of hair to us, but you pretend not to care. Why would you even bother to show us that hair if you don’t care?

It’s almost September, so in fashion land that means it’s time for ‘The September issue’. It is an exciting and stressful time, for those who work at one of the large fashion titles it has been a manic time – like giving birth to a whole new season of fashion. In this digital era, the September print issue is still very important, a way for magazines to present their vision and connect with their readers. Although the digital platforms surrounding the issue are also becoming more important, as we see by numerous making-of videos which tickle our appetite.
